An exhilarating experience and one that I will never take for granted | Radhika, Voom Intern
Radhika, Voom
It was the end of April, my first year of studying photography was coming to an end. I was lacking experience with photography outwith the music industry in Glasgow, and I personally felt that I was deficient with the knowledge of having a deeper insight into the business side of the creative industry.
Knowing how to expand my networking skills and collaborating with other creatives was something I was struggling to do. I had a solid understanding of the foundations of photography and capturing and creating moments with my camera. However, I was very keen on enhancing my current knowledge even further.
This was the case until I saw an Instagram post on Voom’s page about an opportunity of taking part in a six-week UNLOCKED internship. An opportunity with one of the most exciting creative agencies in Glasgow, what was not to love. A secret between us is that I applied at the very last minute (shh) - I would not recommend this!
Nonetheless, considering my last-minute application, I was over the moon when I was notified that I was one of over 300 applicants to be successful.
On my first day of entering the office based in the heart of the Barrowlands, I was feeling slightly anxious as I was apprehensive that I was going to be dealing with lots of new creative projects that I didn’t have enough prior experience of. However, I was greeted so warmly by the Voom team. Emy especially did an amazing job at providing me with the utmost support that was needed throughout the internship and providing me with the most valuable knowledge.

I truly had an amazing summer with Voom. Every day I was learning something entirely new. With a focus on social media management and media strategies and constantly workshopping creative ideas for clients, I fully felt immersed in each day as it came. It was an exhilarating experience and one that I will never take for granted.

I have so many highlights from my time during the internship. My personal highlight was creating social media content on the opening day for “The Clubhouse” in Princess Square. This was the first time I had been on a location shoot for several hours. The day was challenging but so rewarding. I got to participate in capturing content for their socials as well as plan social media strategies for the business beforehand. I got to capture some moments on Carlo’s (the photographer’s) camera by myself during that day. He allowed me to borrow his camera a variety of times during the shoot and this helped me gain independence and creative control.
This is my advice for next year’s UNLOCKED candidates:
Don’t be scared whether your creative ideas are not strong enough, your colleagues will truly appreciate them, and this will allow for unique input
Set goals for yourself before you start your internship as this will allow you to learn the most that you can
Don’t be afraid to ask questions, no question is a silly question (cliché phrase but it's so true!)
Most of all, enjoy yourself! An opportunity like this is one that you can’t buy, so cherish every minute of your time and take in all the experiences you endure!
