UNLOCKING the best version of me | Zoé, Whyte & Mackay Intern

Zoé, Whyte & Mackay

As someone who has spent years searching for what truly excites me - whether in sports, hobbies, or academics - finding my passion has been a long journey. Initially applying for a degree in Psychology before switching to Business Management was a pivotal decision, but it wasn’t until I took my first marketing class that I felt like I had found a field that truly resonated with me.

After numerous job rejections (we have all been there), I finally received the email that I had been selected as the UNLOCKED intern for Whyte & Mackay - a company that caught my attention not just for its reputation, but for being a prominent part / symbol of Scotland, a country that has become my second home.

From the beginning, I wasn’t sure what to expect, especially since whisky wasn’t really my thing. But from the moment I started, the warmth of the team and the guidance of my manager set a positive tone. My early weeks were all about soaking up as much knowledge as possible. And before long, I was involved in a wide range of projects that gave me invaluable experience across communications and marketing.

A Role That Covered It All: Communications, Marketing and Event Planning

The most exciting part of my internship was the variety of tasks I got to work on. I had the opportunity to write multiple articles for the company’s internal newsletter, draft press releases and contribute to various written pieces for upcoming events. The hands-on nature of the role was exactly what I needed to develop my skills and gain confidence in my abilities.

I also got the chance to take charge of key projects: creating an updated company showreel video. From concept to execution, each task challenged me to think creatively while maintaining the brand’s voice. I worked closely with external agencies on social media strategies and event coverage giving me a deeper understanding of brand messaging and digital strategy. Additionally, I was responsible for coordinating photoshoots for new bottle releases at one of Edinburgh’s finest hotels, ensuring that each product was captured in its best light. These experiences helped me understand the importance of brand alignment and attention to detail, especially in such a dynamic and competitive industry.

Stepping Out of My Comfort Zone: Event Management

Event planning became the highlight of my internship. I found myself fascinated by the fast-paced nature of organising high-end events. One of my standout experiences was helping to plan a prestigious conference in Edinburgh that only takes place once every five years. As an intern in a room filled with CEOs, business leaders, and directors, the experience was both daunting and exhilarating. After overcoming my initial bout of imposter syndrome, I embraced the opportunity to interact with these incredible individuals, learning from their insights and experiences - and overall having just a fun time.

The complexity and detail involved in creating an unforgettable guest experience were fascinating to witness, and the luxurious nature of the event added an extra layer of excitement. Being trusted to interact with such high-profile guests and contribute to an event of that magnitude was an experience I’ll never forget.

Gaining Insights and Skills

In addition, I also played a key role in organising luxurious overseas press trips. I handled travel arrangements, accommodations, detailed itineraries and made sure everything aligned with the premium experience we aimed to deliver.

Another valuable aspect of my internship was cross-functional collaboration. Working closely with different teams and attending cross-departmental meetings gave me a broader perspective on how everything fits together in a company like Whyte & Mackay.

A Grateful Heart

Throughout this internship, I’ve realised just how much I love working in a dynamic environment filled with opportunities for creativity and collaboration. The Whyte & Mackay team, especially my manager, treated me as an equal partner giving me responsibilities that allowed me to challenge myself and grow.

Their trust, guidance and belief in my abilities helped me overcome self-doubt and unlock a level of confidence I didn’t know I had.

Reflecting on my time here, I am immensely grateful to my team for making me feel like a valued member of the Whyte & Mackay team. Their warmth, wisdom, and encouragement made this internship an experience that has been nothing short of transformative. I’ve learned the importance of stepping out of my comfort zone, the power of human connection, and the value of believing in myself.

As I look forward to the future, I am more confident than ever that I’ve found my passion. This internship has not only given me the skills I need to succeed in the marketing and communications industry but also the belief that I am capable of achieving great things. Thank you Whyte & Mackay for unlocking the best version of me!
